In the Top 10 list of sports personalities searched for on Google in Ireland over the last 12 months, the UFC fighter ranks as the highest searched Irish athlete.
Unsurprisingly, Michael Schumacher is the most searched after his terrible skiing accident in the final days of 2013 and the stories regarding his condition gleaned massive interest.
McGregor was second on the list with Oscar Pistorious third, given the interest in his trial for the killing of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
Two-time major winner in 2014, Rory McIlroy was fourth with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo coming in ahead of Luis Suarez, who hit the headlines for almost ending Liverpool’s long wait for a Premier League title and the biting incident with Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup.
Brazilian star Neymar is eighth in the list ahead of Manchester United’s former coach David Moyes who was sacked after less than a year in charge.
Roy Keane has been in the headlines quite a bit in 2014 with the book, the row, joining Aston Villa, leaving Aston Villa and being linked with Celtic but he just limps on to the list in 10th.
Brian O’Driscoll won the Six Nations with Ireland, the Rabodirect Pro12 with Leinster and retired in 2014 but doesn’t make the list.
What may surprise many is that Arsenal was the most searched sports team on Google.
